Ordering Radioactive Material
Please follow the steps below:
-
Log in to the online Radiation Safety Information System (RSIS) and put in a request for the radionuclide you wish to order.
-
You will receive a Material Request Approval Number via email once your order request has been approved. The Material Request Approval Number for each item ordered must be included in your Bear Buy (or other purchasing method) request under the shipping address.
-
All radioactive packages must be received at the Hazardous Material Facility on the UC Berkeley campus. Radiation Safety will ensure the package is delivered timely to your campus location. Please designate the "Ship To" address as:
University of California
Berkeley Hazardous Materials Facility
1 Frank Schlessinger Way Berkeley, CA 94720
ATTN: Auth# XXXXX - RUA# XXXX
Please direct any questions regarding orders of radioactive materials to radsafety@berkeley.edu.
Disposal of Radioactive Material
Make sure that all waste is properly packaged and labeled for disposal. If you have any questions about proper packaging, please refer to Appendix B in the Radiation Safety Manual.
EH&S picks up waste directly from laboratories or from the CPUs in the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), Koshland Hall, Li Ka Shing, Morgan Hall, Stanley Hall, or Weill Hall.
In RSIS:
-
To dispose of material in a CPU, select "Dispose in CPU." You should bring your waste to the CPU on the same day.
-
For all other disposals, select "Request EH&S Pickup."
-
Immediately print out the waste label generated by RSIS.
-
The waste must be double bagged with the waste label placed between the two bags.
For specific waste inquiries please contact radsafety@berkeley.edu.
Obtain Dosimetry (Radiation Badge and/or Ring)
If you are required to wear dosimetry as part of your routine work with radiation, your new dosimetry will be provided to you by Radiation Safety. Follow the steps on the Radiation Safety Training page. Users that require on-boarding and go to a physical session will receive their dosimetry at that time. All other users should contact radsafety@berkeley.edu to schedule an appointment to be issued your dosimetry.
REQUESTING DOSIMETRY
If you feel your current or expected radionuclide use may require a dosimetry evaluation for potential radiation exposure, please contact radsafety@berkeley.edu. If dosimetry is required, you will need to edit your Radiation User Information Record and resubmit it.
IMPORTANT “DO’S AND DON’TS” WITH YOUR DOSIMETRY
Do’s with Dosimetry
-
DO wear your dosimeter(s) whenever you are working with radiation sources or radiation producing machines.
-
DO wear your whole body badge at chest height on your lab coat and your finger ring on your hand under your gloves and facing the source of radiation.
-
DO call or email Radiation Safety (642-3073 or radsafety@berkeley.edu) if your dosimeter is lost, contaminated, or is accidentally exposed to radiation.
-
DO only use your UC Berkeley dosimetry at UC Berkeley (If visiting other institutions they will provide you with dosimetry if needed.)
-
DO exchange your dosimeter promptly when requested
Don’ts with Dosimetry
-
DO NOT get your dosimeter wet or expose it to high heat.
-
DO NOT store your dosimeter(s) around sources of radiation.
