Radiation Safety Training

Radioactive Materials (RAM) RUAs

1. Complete EHS 401.1 – Radiation Safety Training for Users of Radioactive Materials. This course requires the latest version of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. Please use Firefox for the best compatibility. Step 2 will not be able to be completed until 24 hours after you complete step 1.

2. 24 hours after completing EHS 401.1, you may sign up for an EHS 403 Radiation Safety RUA On-Boarding session that fits your schedule. If you are unable to attend a scheduled session before you need to begin work, please email radsafety@berkeley.edu to schedule an ad hoc session. NOTE: Sessions DO NOT always show up in chronological order.

3. Submit a Radiation User Information Record via Google Forms.

Radiation Producing Machine (RPM) RUAs

1. Complete EHS 401.2 – Radiation Safety Training for Users of Radiation Producing Machines. This course requires the latest version of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. Please use Firefox for the best compatibility.

2. Submit a Radiation User Information Record via Google Forms.

Both RAM and RPM RUAs

1. Complete EHS 401.3 – Radiation Safety Training for Users of Radioactive Materials and Radiation Producing Machines. This course requires the latest version of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. Please use Firefox for the best compatibility.
   Step 2 will not be able to be completed until 24 hours after you complete step 1.

Biennial Retraining

Radiation Safety training is required every other year for researchers on an active RUA. Researchers will receive multiple email reminders starting at 45-days before the training expiration date. Failure to complete biennial retraining in a timely manner will result in removal from your RUA(s). If removed, you cannot resume work until reinstated, after completing retraining.

Researchers who wish to complete their biennial Radiation Safety retraining must log onto the UC Learning Center and complete the appropriate course based on the type(s) of RUAs they are currently working under:

• Materials - EHS 402.1 – Retraining for Radioactive Materials Users

• RPMs - EHS 402.2 – Retraining for Radiation Producing Machines Users

• Both - EHS 402.3 – Retraining for Radioactive Materials & Radiation Producing Machines Users

Accessing an RUA's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Login to the UC Learning Center and enter your RUA number in the search bar. This will return a list of the SOPs authorized by your RUA. RUA personnel will need to review each SOP they plan to use. After reviewing the SOP, be sure to click on the “complete” button after submitting verification that the SOP has been reviewed to ensure that your SOP review is properly documented in the UC Learning Center.

Please notify radsafety@berkeley.edu if any of your SOPs are missing or not up to date.

We can work with you as needed to limit access to your SOPs if they contain novel research that you do not wish to appear in unrestricted UC Learning Center searches.

Training for Individuals Working Near Radiation Sources (Ancillary Non-user Training)

Staff who work in labs where radioactive materials or RPMs are used but are not users themselves must complete EHS 404 Radiation Safety Awareness Training for Non-Users. EHS 401.1, 401.2, and 401.3 also satisfy this requirement.
