Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Chemical Hygiene Plan

See CHP Flip Chart for PPE requirements for your lab. See the UCOP PPE Policy for additional details.

See resources below for guidance on selecting appropriate PPE: Refer to the EH&S Eye Protection Fact Sheet for additional details including guidance on prescription safety glasses.

See the EH&S Glove Selection Chart for guidance on selecting gloves.

Supervisors are responsible for assessing the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or likely to be present, which necessitate the use of PPE. See your lab’s CHP Flipchart for additional PPE guidance specific to your lab operations.

PPE Training

Lab personnel are required to be trained on proper PPE use by their supervisor.

This training includes: when PPE is necessary; what PPE is necessary; how to properly don, doff, adjust, and wear PPE; limitations of PPE; proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of PPE; demonstration of ability to use PPE.

PPE Exemptions

The PPE requirement will not apply to laboratories/technical areas which have been designated and posted as hazardous materials free areas. To obtain this designation, contact EH&S.
