Chemical Inventory

Important Note: Please do not update or edit your chemical inventory in CIS.

The campus is soon switching its chemical inventory system from CIS to Chemicals. In order to successfully migrate the current data in CIS, more time is needed to analyze its contents. Any new data entered after 12:00 am on 12/6/2018 will not be migrated to Chemicals.

The expected go-live date for Chemicals is Monday, 12/17/2018. You will be able to edit and update your chemical inventory at that point.

You can still use CIS to:

  • Print a chemical inventory door sign
  • As a reference, to review the inventory that is already entered.

Chemical Inventory System (CIS) tracks the storage and use of hazardous materials on all UC campuses. UC Berkeley is required to report that information, and these reports are compiled by EH&S. In addition, CIS assists emergency responders and provides all lab members with a tool with which to track hazardous items in their rooms.

Anyone responsible for an area where hazardous materials are stored is required to maintain a complete chemical inventory. This includes, but is not limited to, people in the following roles:

  • principal investigators
  • supervisors
  • storeroom managers

hazardous material: any material that, because of its quantity, concentration, physical characteristics, or chemical characteristics, poses a significant present or potential hazard to human health and safety or to the environment if released.
