Executive Director's Message
I am pleased to re-introduce the Office of Environment, Health & Safety’s annual review as I complete my first year in the permanent Executive Director role. While I have been part of this office for over a decade, the past year has provided a new perspective and given me a greater appreciation for the breadth of work this team does every day to support the University.
EH&S touches nearly every part of the campus. Our staff work with researchers, faculty, students, and campus partners to help them navigate complex safety and regulatory requirements, with the shared goal to keep work moving forward. Much of what we do happens behind the scenes and I am proud of the expertise, responsiveness, and commitment our team brings to that work.
There is a lot to be proud of this year. We completed our campus-wide chemical inventory tagging project, a significant multi-year effort that strengthens fire safety and regulatory compliance. We also made substantial progress on accessibility, bringing more than 1,200 documents, trainings, and digital tools into compliance with Title II of the ADA and making our safety resources accessible for the campus community.
Looking ahead, our work is guided by our 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, with a focus on three areas: improving how we deliver services, using data to better understand and improve safety outcomes, and investing in our people. These priorities reflect what I believe will help our department thrive: provide effective and practical support to the University while continuing to build the expertise and capacity of our team.
I am proud of what we have accomplished together this year, and grateful for the work our staff do every day. I look forward to our continued work in keeping UC Berkeley safe, healthy, and resilient.
