Considerations for International Research

Considerations for International Research

Held Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm

This event was designed for both travelers and their supervisors, including faculty, graduate students, postdocs, staff researchers and departmental staff involved in international research. Topics included ground-tested tips from the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) and, from other Campus experts, key information on international trip planning, export control, data security, and the various support services available to members of the UC Berkeley community conducting research outside of the United States. Participants gained a better understanding of tools and best practices to plan for their international research activities, and resources in case things don’t go as planned.

The town hall featured presentations from the following individuals and Q&A, with a welcome from Vice Chancellor for Research, Kathy Yelick.

Fieldwork Ready: Practical Strategies to Head Out Prepared

Fieldwork Ready: Practical Strategies to Head Out Prepared

Held Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm

This event was intended for those who conduct outdoor fieldwork and research in remote or resource-limited settings. We reviewed planning resources, common field hazards, field and travel medicine, and emergency communications, and used scenarios to practice hazard assessment and decision-making in the field. The session helped researchers create site-specific field safety plans and make preparations to support a safe and inclusive field experience.

The town hall was led by Sara Souza, Program Director, UC Field Research Safety, Environment, Health and Safety.
