Chemical Inventory Spot Check Inspections

August 22, 2025

The following message is meant for labs:

Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) will be performing audits of groups on campus with chemical inventories to check for chemical inventory accuracy. Maintaining chemical inventories to at least 90% accuracy is a prerequisite to UC Systemwide MAQ compliance

How can I prepare?

Follow instructions on how to maintain an accurate chemical inventory on the EH&S website. All hazardous chemicals should be tagged, entered, and deleted within Chemicals on a regular basis. If you are entering non-hazardous items into the chemical inventory, these must also be tagged.

When will the audits take place?

EH&S has been auditing a select number of groups throughout the summer and will ramp up to more groups throughout the Fall semester. All groups will be eventually audited on an annual basis.

You will be contacted the week prior to the week that you will receive an inventory audit.

Do I need to be present during the audit?

You may be present if you wish, but your attendance is not required. EH&S will arrange with lab or department staff to get access to lab spaces.

How will audit results be communicated?

You will receive a follow up email with audit results and instructions on how to resolve chemical inventory issues, if required. Groups with the most accurate inventories will be eligible for a prize!
