Description

Workplace Lead Safety
EH&S assists departments in preventing overexposures to lead and lead-contaminated surfaces in the workplace. EH&S specialists analyze suspect materials for lead content and establish corrective measures where necessary. Suspect paints and other surface coatings are sampled and analyzed for lead content prior to demolition or renovation work that might generate airborne lead hazards. During construction, EH&S oversees worker activities to confirm compliance with Cal/OSHA lead regulations and ensure the safety of nearby faculty, staff and students. Specific activities may include air monitoring, training, and/or work procedure development.

University Lead Education and Prevention Project (ULEPP)
This committee (with representatives from EH&S, University Health Service, Housing and Dining, Child Care Services, Planning, Design & Construction, and family housing resident representatives) is charged with reviewing environmental lead levels in paint and soils surrounding University-operated family housing units and child care sites, with monitoring lead exposure to children who live in the units and/or attend University child care, and with devising and implementing expsoure control strategies. The role of EH&S includes sampling to determine environmental lead concentrations, and providing information to concerned individuals.

Environmental Lead Abatement Management
EH&S assists in the development of a campus lead abatement strategy, which includes determining abatement priorities; writing abatement contracts; supervising abatement contractors; monitoring environmental and occupational lead levels before, during and after abatement; collecting and disposing of waste; and complying with applicable regulations.
