Bloodborne Pathogens Written Exposure Control Plan

Cal/OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (8 CCR §5193 - http://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/5193.html) requires all laboratories and departments that work with human blood, body fluids, tissues, or cells (including cell lines) to reduce or eliminate the risk of exposure to human bloodborne pathogens with implementation of a written plan, training, and Hepatitis B vaccination.

The Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) in the University Health Services provides appropriate medical services including vaccinations (http://uhs.berkeley.edu/facstaff/occhealth/index.shtml).

Training

Laboratory personnel – Personnel that work with Bloodborne Pathogens also require an annual refresher. Refresher training must meet required elements provided in the Bloodborne Pathogens standard (see "Training" under "Human Source Materials – Additional Precautions" in Section III of the BUA.)

    Options for refresher training are:

Non-academic departments – Annual training is required, and new personnel should be trained prior to starting work that could reasonably result in exposure to human blood or body fluids. The EH&S training course “UCB 735 EHS Bloodborne Pathogens Training” meets the training requirement.  Personnel can enroll at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/ice/home/. For easiest navigation, click "enroll now" and use course code: D735.
