Description

Compressed gas cylinders pose serious physical hazards if not stored properly. Most gases also pose chemical or other hazards since many are toxic, flammable,corrosive, strong oxidizers or displace oxygen.  For a complete descriptionof UC Berkeley's Compressed Gas Cylinder program, download the CompressedGas Cylinders: Proper Management and Use booklet as a PDF.

Disposing of non-empty cylinders can be complicated and expensive if the original gas vendor cannot be located or is not willing to take the cylinder back, or if the gas cylinder is not labeled. There are special requirements for storing certain toxic gases.

Gas cylinder tags can be used for managing and tracking compressed gas usage(sample). The tags are available on requestfrom EH&S at ehs@berkeley.edu or642-3073.
