Description

Most campus construction projects have the potential to impact the health and safety of faculty, students, staff, the public, and the environment.

Identifying health, safety, and environmental hazards and regulatory requirements at the beginning of the project will prevent accidents, environmental contamination, cleanup costs, worker health costs, lost time, and possibly regulatory agency fines.

The Construction Coordination Group (CCG) provides guidance to project managers who have to comply with the regulations, (except for building and fire code requirements which are handled by the EH&S Fire Prevention Unit).

If your project involves any of the following activities, contact Hank Field prior to the project planning stages.

Safety and Health

• Disturbing lead paint, or other lead containing materials
• Removing or cleaning old air supply or exhaust ductwork
• Use of hazardous chemicals
• Loud noise (e.g., jackhammers), or dust generation
• Roof-work
• Scaffold use
• Disturbing moldy building components
• Pedestrian routing around construction

Environmental

• Concrete or stucco work
• Landscaping, or paving
• Removing old light ballasts
• Use of hazardous chemicals, (may effect building occupants)
• Generation of hazardous waste
• Removing old caulking
• New plumbing installations
• Excavation, trenching or drilling, or other disturbance of soil
• Demolition
• Laboratory renovation including plumbing and vacuum lines (potential mercury contamination)
• Construction in laboratories where chemicals, radioactive materials, or biohazardous materials were used
• Installing or modifying diesel or gasoline generators
• Using high pressure washing when cleaning or painting preparation
• Installing or removing underground or above ground storage tanks
  

The Construction Coordination Group (CCG) reviews construction plans from the conception design phase through the post construction phase. The CCG identifies health, safety, and environmental protection requirements that come from federal, state and local regulations.

The CCG also works with project managers to write construction specifications that incorporate the regulatory requirements.
