Summary of Charges

Determines humane treatment and proper care of all live vertebrate animals (animals) used in campus research or teaching; determines compliance of the campus animal care and use program with all applicable laws, regulations and policies; reviews activities of the Office of Laboratory Animal Care. Makes recommendations to the Vice Chancellor with regard to animal facilities, the animal care and use program, and general policy regarding use of animals in research or teaching. Inspects all animal facilities semi-annually, investigates concerns regarding animal care and use, and reviews all research and teaching proposals involving the use of animals. Has authority to approve, require modifications in, or withhold approval of any proposed project, and to suspend any ongoing project that it determines is not being conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and guidelines.
